Busy, busy, busy...

I've had a busy week with my family. I've travelled about a thousand km., been cleaned up, vacuumed, and hung out with my big sis.

We did it!

Trevor Linden tipped the winning goal through Marty Turco's pads seven minutes into the third as the Canucks downed the Stars 4-1 in game seven. Vancouver will now face Anaheim in round two starting Wednesday.

FRIDAY,... THE 13TH!?

Friday the 13th - The Most Widespread Superstition?

The sixth day of the week and the number 13 both have foreboding reputations said to date from ancient times, and their inevitable conjunction from one to three times a year portends more misfortune than some credulous minds can bear. Some sources say it may be the most widespread superstition in the United States. Some people won't go to work on Friday the 13th; some won't eat in restaurants; many wouldn't think of setting a wedding on the date.

NUCKS BRINGS DOWN THE STARS

After three scoreless periods of overtime, Henrik Sedin finally snapped a puck between Turco's legs at 18:06 of the fourth overtime period to give the Canucks a 5-4 win in game one. Luongo made 72 saves in his first ever playoff appearance.
I was sleeping when it all happened. Mom & Dad fell asleep before the winning goal too!

Get Rid of Bugs, Slugs, Deer, Babies, and other Pests in your Garden!

Those pesky critters that munch on your veggie lunch - how do you get rid of them?

To remove deer from from your garden, buy LifeBuoy soap and shave it into pieces. If you can't find LifeBuoy, get another deodorant soap. Place the shavings in the a cut leg of pantyhose and tie the top. Then tie the pantyhose on to garden stakes. Place several of these around your garden.

For easy earwig removal, roll a newspaper and tie it closed. Soak it in water and place in your garden overnight. In the morning it will be filled with earwigs. Bag it and throw it away. Repeat for several nights.

Slugs in your garden? Plant cabbages all around your garden. Slugs just love 'em! In the morning, grab your gloves, a bag and pick them off the cabbage.

Spiders in your garden means fewer bugs to eat your vegetables. To entice the spiders in to your garden, spread hay mulch through your garden. Spiders will make the mulch their home and will feast on the bugs that would rather be feasting on your garden!

Ants using your plants for their personal highway? Spread petroleum jelly around the stems to keep the ants from climbing.

As for Babies, well they're just as cute as garden gnomes, so just leave them alone!

Make A Coffee Can Herb Garden

If you drink a lot of coffee like my Mom & Dad, you probably have quite a few metal coffee cans on hand. With just a little effort, you can make a useful and pretty handmade gift for your friends and family.

First, wash out your can and peel off any labels. Next, apply a coat of metal primer to your can. Let the primer dry thoroughly. Then, apply a coat of bright acrylic paint to the can.

Once your can is painted, you can decorate it. I like to apply crackle medium and then add a top coat of color. This effect is beautiful if you paint a deep blue undercoat and a rich red overcoat on your can.

You may want to rubberstamp bugs or garden tools onto the can instead. To do this, use stamps that are flexible so that you can stamp onto the curved surface of the can. You can apply a light coat of acrylic paint to the stamp and then press the stamp onto the can, carefully rolling the stamp so that the whole image is stamped onto the can. If you mess up, don't worry. You can wipe the stamped image off the can and start over.

Another great decorative technique for decorating cans is decoupage. Use empty seed packets with pretty artwork or cut pictures from magazines and decoupage them to the can in an attractive pattern.

Once your can is decorated, apply a coat of sealer to the finished product. If you will use the can outside, you may want to let this coat dry and apply a second coat of sealer.

Now, you are ready to prepare your can for planting. Turn the can upside down. Use a 3 inch nail and a hammer to poke drainage holes in the bottom of the can. Turn your can over and fill it to just an inch below the rim with good potting soil.

Next it is time for you to decide which herbs you will be planting in your can. Chives, basil, oregano, thyme and parsley all are great choices. Of course, you can also put a lovely scented geranium in the can, instead.

As a finishing touch, add a tag with information about caring for the herb and a few great recipes. It is easy to attach the tag with a simple florist pick.

Finally, consider other ideas for your coffee can. For instance, instead of adding potting soil and an herb, add a garden trowel, gardening gloves, a packet of seeds, a box of tea and a package of tea biscuits for do it yourselfers.

Faberge Eggs

The Faberge eggs began in 1884 with an Easter egg made for the czar that became a gift for his wife, Czarina Maria. The egg reminded the empress of her homeland, and so from then on it was agreed that Faberge would make an Easter egg each year for Maria. Faberge designed Easter eggs for another eleven years until Alexander III died. Then Nicholas II, Alexander's son, continued the tradition. It was agreed that the Easter gift would always have an egg shape and would hold a surprise. These projects became top priority of the company and were planned and worked on far in advance--a year or longer. The surprise was always kept secret.

3 More Days!

I'm so excited about this Easter thing, I can't wait to see that giant bunny! And there's this thing that my family all loves to eat called "chocolate". I'll have to try a little taste of that!

Qualicum Beach Road Trip

Amber and Mommy and I went to The Milner Gardens in Qualicum Beach on Sunday. It was lovely weather, and we saw some Bald Eagles and Sea Lions.
